Founded in November of 2010, Pibbles to the Rescue has been protecting and rehabilitating dogs for the last seven years while working with Animal Control Officers of Hillsborough County Animal Services.
Darla, the Staffordshire Terrier, is the Executive Director of this organization and gives the paw of approval for all newcomers. Darla is a former rescue of Hillsborough County Animal Services and does her best to support having an open spot for each dog in need. The sanctuary can only house up to 15 dogs at a time.
While this organization has the word rescue in its name, they are in fact a sanctuary. The first promise this organization makes to its canines is to protect them and give them all the time they need. Pibbles to the Rescue cannot take in strays or owner surrenders because they provide protective custody for active court cases. As a result, it is challenging to determine the amount of time each dog will need at this non-profit. While in the care of Pibbles to the Rescue, Darla and staff provide food, care, training, socialization, and behavior modification. Once a court case has closed and the non-profit has been awarded custody of the dogs, the dogs are re-assessed by the Animal Control Officers. The non-profit will also have an outside behavior modification personal assess if the dog is ready for adoption or what the next steps are for the dog in order to help get them ready for adoption.
When she’s not assessing the status of the dogs in the organizations care, Darla enjoys advocating for Pibbles to the Rescue while providing education to the general public about animal abuse and overall needs of the organization. Being rescued from a property where poor breeding was taking place makes Darla the perfect mascot. Darla is a dwarf pitbul, a birth defect of poor breeding trying to produce a “pocket pit.” Darla dreams to one day be able to provide sanctuary for more dogs.
If you see Darla around Tampa, Florida, feel free to ask her person if you can pet Darla as she trots by, just don’t be surprised if you fall in love.
